Safety measures credited with saving miners at New Orleans mine
West Frankfort Illinois January 29 Safety measures were believed by mine owners to have saved more than 1100 coal miners from possible injury today after a local gas explosion at the New Orleans mine killed five men. The blast was the first in the mine one of the largest and best equipped in the world. Officials said whale dust and other devices greatly reduced hazards including the risk of coal dust explosion after gas ignition. No fire followed the blast and damage was negligible. Only three men besides the dead were nearby and escaped with slight injuries. The victims bodies were recovered. Cause of the explosion was not determined.
