A. Y. Russell, gray haired former secretary of Holston Trust Company, testified he could not recall signing and mailing a $500000 state depository bond to Nashville amid the fraud breach of trust trial of J. B. Ramsey. He said I have no recollection repeatedly under cross examination by W. T. Kennerly. He did identify his signature on the bond.
In Honolulu on January 28 AP reports Mrs. Granville Fortescue of New York and Washington and three naval co-defendants will be arraigned in circuit court on an indictment charging second degree murder for the lynching of Kahahawai. The defense seeks to quash the indictment arguing grand jury coercion by Judge Cristy and may seek bail for Fortescue and Lieutenant Massie. Kahahawai, one of five youths arrested for assaulting Mrs Massie, was slain before trial. the other four have returned to jail and will be retried. Transfer to naval courts was discussed but not decided.
Denver police say a dead man identified as Joseph Clinton Riley, ring leader of the Bower kidnapping, plus two accomplices, bring the case to a close. Benjamin P. Bower was released after a $50 000 ransom, amid a raid that followed Riley’s suicide.
Treasury receipts for January 26 were 6,526,983.94 dollars with expenditures of 8,888,492.75 dollars and a balance of 34,925,972.55 dollars. Customs duties for 26 days in January amounted to 23,146,886.00 dollars.

He was blindfolded and guarded during the ordeal and rode in the abductors car for several hours before the house stop amid blurred time.
Japanese marines entered Shanghai's Chinese quarter under a midnight order and fighting erupted near the international settlement. Chinese forces were around 24,000 as Japan threatened force to dissolve anti Japanese groups inside the settlement while municipal authorities capitulated to the ultimatum. Foreign troops including U S marines prepared to defend the settlement if needed.
Tokyo authorities announce a Japanese marine landing to seize Shanghai's Chinese quarter near the international settlement. Captain Samejima leads the operation aimed at suppressing anti-Japanese groups outside the settlement. Foreigners organize a defense as American, British, French and Japanese troops bolster patrols and mobilize along the race course.
Shanghai authorities accepted Japan demands shortly before a Japanese ultimatum to halt invasion. The city, an international hub, faced a lowering threat as tense talks averted a crisis tonight.
