City officials report only 525 motor vehicle license tags sold for 1941 with about 4,200 tags still available and a Feb. 1 deadline looming. City Recorder J R Pecktal notes no extension action by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen. police warn citations will issue after Feb 1 if the deadline stays.
Tokyo newspapers report Burma agreeing to negotiate a non aggression pact with Japan to complement a fisheries treaty and adjust Russo Japanese relations. The claim cites an address by Foreign Minister Matsuoka before the house budget committee, suggesting Russia’s agreement to sign.
The Tennessee general assembly reaches mid session with Governor Cooper aiming for early adjournment and a focus on one item at a time. Floyd Renfro, 30, fractured his left ankle when caught in a drag chain while unloading wood at Mead Corp. Miss Bertie Lane, 25, suffered a cut eyebrow from flying car door glass. Henry Ford of Ford Town had facial and hand abrasions.
Prime Minister Ion Antonescu ousted Iron Guardists from his cabinet and mounted a strong military government aided by generals who helped quell last week’s uprising. Iron Guard terrorists were rounded up in Bucharest amid a heavy snowstorm as soldiers with bayonets enforced curfew and warned pedestrians.

Budapest Hungary Foreign Minister Count Istvan Csaky aged 46 died at 2 34 am after seven weeks illness He was Hungarys youngest ever foreign minister and had been in a coma since Saturday night He collapsed on December 9 aboard a Yugoslav train shortly after signing a Yugoslav Hungarian friendship pact The illness was first diagnosed as influenza then food poisoning
A Rome radio broadcast heard in New York labels President Roosevelt the dictator of the North American continent. It accuses his policies of driving England toward humiliation and ruin and mentions rumors that Harry Hopkins cabled Roosevelt England is near the end of her rope.
Washington. UP Two men are held by the FBI amid reports of a sensational espionage case. Harlan G Crandall a commission employee and Lawrence Haynes owner of an advertising shop are booked by police for alleged theft of confidential civil service records. Crandall says he was hired to borrow files including names of personnel who know military secrets by two naturalized Germans. He alleges the Germans wanted names for an advertising and credit list but he refused to obtain the navy yard workers and defense project tool makers names.
Washington reports large defense awards push total Army contracts to 5.81 billion dollars. Officials also note unobligated available sums are trimmed to about 782.7 million.
Secretary Hull testified behind closed doors before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the lease lend bill. He warned that some information could affect national security if published and urged keeping it confidential. Open hearings were set to resume, while the House convened in executive session with Admiral Stark and Gen Marshall anticipated for testimony. Senator Vandenberg indicated no plan by opponents to delay the legislation.
The January term of Sullivan county circuit court is adjourned until Wednesday at 8 a.m. in Blountville due to illness of Judge Shelburne Ferguson and Clerk A. N. Hawk. Docket shows 48 cases remaining, many misdemeanors tied to drunk driving and liquor. Trials and motions rescheduled for Wednesday. three days expected to complete the docket.
Six persons died when a Chicago Miami passenger train of the Southern railroad struck an automobile carrying the Ledford family and a sister. Ivan Ledford 27 his wife 24 and three Ledford children ages two to eight plus Miss Annie Ledford were killed. The disaster occurred near Elijay Ga about 25 miles from Dalton as the train halted about 200 yards after clipping the car.
Four hundred officers and sailors from the scuttled German liner Columbus head to a remote CCC camp in south central New Mexico near Billy the Kid country. Officials say the group is not POWs but bonded paying guests of the United States, to be held at the former CCC site.

Physicians in Bristol report General Julius F. Howell commander in chief of United Confederate Veterans is much improved from lobar pneumonia. Howell, who turned 95 on January 17, was claimed ill a week ago while traveling to Nashville for a Confederate pension board meeting. He attended the meeting, went home, and worsened, with doctors noting grave condition last Sunday.
