Berlin dispatch reports Wilhelmstrasse under heavy guard after armed troops and vehicles block traffic in front of the government buildings. The move follows rumors of monarchist insurrection aimed at Erzberger amid the Erzberger Helfferich trial. Erzberger was shot in the shoulder yesterday. he remains in his home.
Washington, Jan 26. By a 9 to 5 vote the Senate Military Committee approved compulsory training for boys 18 to 21 and backed the army reorganization bill. The plan creates a citizen army, a 280000 man standing army, and an 18000 officer reserve, with five percent annual regular army reduction and two percent for officers for five years. Martens of Soviet Russia testified before the Senate, asserting funds, aims, and operations while denying involvement in US unrest. An adjournment followed as Martens reviewed records.
Pittsburgh Kansas January 26 No statement from Alexander Howat president of district 14 of the United Mine Workers of America tonight regarding the course after 450 miners refused to work in protest against the industrial court law passed by the Kansas legislature last week Howat said the strike was not authorized by district 14 mine officials and reflected broader labor opposition in Kansas He added national UMW leaders may urge miners to stay out of Kansas and some workers already in the state may depart quickly.
Elizabethgrad, a major city 130 miles north of Kherson, fell to Bolshevik troops per a Moscow wireless dispatch. The report dated January 27 notes the strategic capture amid the South Russia campaign.

New York on January 25 reports that Americans plan to place a colossal stone statue near Meaux on the Marne in memory of the French stand there in 1914. Thomas W. Lamont of J P Morgan and Co chairs a committee coordinating the project with French leaders Marshal Joffre and Marshal Foch to determine the site.
David S. Houston, Secretary of Agriculture, will be appointed Secretary of the Treasury to succeed Carter Glass who resigns to become a Virginia senator. Edward T. Meredith of Iowa will replace Houston as head of the Agriculture Department. Meredith travels to Washington to assume duties. This cabinet shift marks the first department-to-department transfer in Wilson's administration.
W C Hatton of Meyersdale Pa former Kingsport Improvement Co engineer and now visiting observer says Kingsport looks solid shows rapid growth and diverse industries. He predicts it will become one of the region’s largest cities.
Liverpool dispatch reports Lady Astor, MP for Plymouth, arguing for state purchase and control of the liquor trade while denouncing prohibition as impracticable. She said she hates the word and would resist any prohibition by implying she desires it when forbidden.
President Wilson plans to urge Congress to authorize a $150,000,000 appropriation to feed starving Poland and other states on the Bolshevik frontiers. He will not send a formal note but will press individual members to back the bill.
James Whetzel of Kingsport faces murder charge for the death of his wife Lillie at a Kingsport laundry on October 3. The case appears on the Bristol Circuit Court docket with Judge Vines expected to adjourn the Blountville session to Bristol. Also listed are arson charge against H. C. Giles for the Tickle building fire and moonshining cases for Mark Byers, Robert Sons, and Taylor Duncan found with a 90 gallon still.
City Health Officer T. B. Yancey announced a city wide sanitation drive beginning the first week in February. A Dublin dispatch reports two thousand American rifles landed on the Irish coast a fortnight ago. Police are unable to locate the weapons. The same dispatch notes Republican loan subscriptions total six million pounds, including funds from the United States.
Germany has sent a note to the Peace Conference urging Allies to relieve Germany from executing the Versailles treaty clause that requires surrender of persons accused of war crimes. The note has not yet been made public.
Berne reports from Bucharest that 40,000 Russian refugees on Romania's frontier include Denikine forces and contagious diseases. About 2,000 have been allowed to enter and are sent to a camp atTulcha, 150 miles northeast of Bucharest.
In New York on January 26 a summons in a new suit was filed by Mrs. Willa D. Shonts, widow of Theodore P. Shonts, against Amanda C. Thomas, the principal beneficiary under the will. The action targets real and personal property allegedly given to Mrs. Thomas before Shonts's death, valued at over 1 million dollars. The complaint has not been filed. Shonts had previously sued Mrs. Thomas for 1 million dollars in damages over alleged alienation of her husband’s affections.

A. W. Spradlin of Kingsport died Jan 18 in a fire that destroyed Edgewood Arsenal civilian barracks near Baltimore. His brother H. A. Spradlin survived after groping through heavy smoke. A. W. Spradlin’s body was later brought to Kingsport for burial.
William Jennings Bryan will address audiences in Johnson City tonight and Bristol tomorrow urging strict enforcement of the Eighteenth Amendment. He will speak at State Street Methodist Church in Bristol, noted for its large auditorium, to support prohibition fund drives in both cities.
