Test Pilot Dies In Lockheed Jet Crash
Two Lockheed California test pilots were aboard the SA71 long-range jet. James T. Zwayer, of Lancaster California, was killed when the plane exploded and plunged to ground near northeastern New Mexico. Albert Mitchell, wife says her husband saw a survivor and helped land. The other pilot, Wit hen Air Force jet reconnaissance, parachuted to safety. The crash occurred near Mesalero, New Mexico, about 20 miles east of the town. The Air Force and state police opened security measures at the scene. The aircraft had been undergoing tests since December 1964 and was declared operational, with some aircraft of its type turned over to the Air Force.
