France devalues the franc to about half its old price, aiming to boost exports and curb imports. Premier Mayer outlined the plan amid opposition from fixed incomes, while Cripps seeks to avert currency shocks in Britain. The system creates two franc prices per dollar, with fixed and free market rates, guiding exporters and importers through essential versus non essential goods.

In Baltimore Maryland a city council vice president was woken at 3 30 am by a caller asking for transit improvements the caller would not share a number and stated he was a night watchman.

A truck at a Johnson City crossing was struck by an east bound train injuring no one else. Mr and Mrs Oscar Blevins of near Jonesboro were killed instantly when the truck was hit broadside and driven 50 to 100 feet onto the tracks. Both were dead on arrival.
Mead Corporation announced a two year contract with United Mine Workers District 50 for a 15 cent an hour across the board raise. Don F Morris said the increase totals 450000 annually for Kingsport plant workers and noted no arbitration cases in 14 months. E B Hollyfield pressed union members to boost efficiency to justify the raise as the contract allows a wage review after the first year.
Deputy Eugene Parker remained in fair condition with head and facial injuries at Kings Mountain Memorial Hospital after his car left a snow covered highway near Bluff City on the Johnson City Highway and struck a teleph one pole. Parker was unconscious at 2 p.m. Monday and under care of Dr. Sutherlin and Dr. Marcy. Sheriff Amos Robinson said he had been in Circuit Court earlier and could not investigate the crash.
General Douglas MacArthur said he would remain in Japan until his mission in the region is completed unless an extraordinary event calls him away. On his 68th birthday he reiterated he would like to return to the United States once his job here ends, and he offered no new plans regarding a possible presidential candidacy or the March 15 return rumor. He appeared hale and vigorous, continuing a strict daily routine and a steady belief in the righteousness of his course.
A 14 day quarantine was ordered for Washington County Jail in Jonesboro after a jailer diagnosed with smallpox. The measure halted circuit court proceedings amid a crowded jail with 75 inmates. County health director Dr B C Mulliniks said the action was necessary to contain the outbreak. Sheriff Luke Warrick described the jail as “running over” with prisoners.
A 20-year-old man abducted 17-year-old Joan Peloquin from Merrill Michigan after breaking into her home. The pair sped toward Saginaw then Three Rivers before she talked him into turning back. Authorities pursued as she helped avert a Chicago bound plan.
