Senator Gale W McGee announces he will block all Agriculture Department funding for the new fiscal year starting July 1 due to the White House budget stance. He vows hearings will be skipped and agencies tied to farm programs would lose salaries and operations unless the administration restores the cut.
Streams of lava threaten Heymney island town on Vestmannaeyjar south of Iceland after Helgafjell eruption. Police say lava walls surround houses as some burn. 6 000 evacuees flee to safety while authorities mobilize emergency aid and fish processing plants work to salvage stored catch. No injuries reported.
Lyndon B. Johnson will be buried Thursday in the family cemetery near his birthplace in central Texas, close to LBJ Ranch where he died of a heart attack. Funeral services will be held in Washington at National City Christian Church before his body is flown back to Texas for burial.
