Unconfirmed word claims Konigsberg fell to Chermiakhovsky’s forces with fighting around Elbing and Mohrungen as Soviet troops breach through Upper Silesia cities Oppeln and Glowitz, amid 30 miles of riverfront lines.
Allied forces in Italy report stronger German defenses south of Bologna as snow ends. Fifth Army patrols advance within eight and a half miles of Bologna on Highway 65 at Barchetta, facing heavy fire. Eighth Army outfits endure raids near the Senio River and Verto Canal while Germans blow up positions around Alfonsine. The air force resumes attacks on supply routes with no reported casualties.

An administration approved measure moves unemployment compensation from the Department of Labor to a new department. Berlin based Nazi news agency Transocean reports eighteen British and American secret agents were captured behind German lines in Slovakia. They allegedly posed as a major, were to sabotage Slovakia and conduct espionage, and were executed by firing squad after a military tribunal.
Washington WPB and OPA announced a joint plan to phase in price and production orders over the coming months, promising better stock of inexpensive garments. The program targets wool, rayon, and cotton with 75 percent of fabric under priority controls.
