The gas chamber failed after 11 minutes when the electrical switch tripped just after 10:07 a.m. Foster showed spasms as the cloudy gas filled the chamber and observers saw him convulse. Coroner L. M. Waring, veteran of 72 electrocutions, called the execution a failure. Foster did not speak after being locked in the nearly soundproof room despite a brief moment of trying to speak.
