Fire Turns Local Man Into Torch

A Kingsport mechanic, Willie B. Lyle, was severely burned when a can of automobile thinner exploded while he tried to start a fire. He suffered burns estimated at 74 percent and was listed in critical condition at Halston Valley Community Hospital. Fire Chief C M Kenner said the man poured thinner into a wood fire when the explosion engulfed him, spreading flames as colleagues tried to help. Lyle, 25 Riverview Apartments resident, was rushed to the hospital after being dragged from the scene and having his clothes burned away.

Vanderbilt seeks NASA aid in aerospace plan

Vanderbilt University has applied to NASA for support in a broad aerospace engineering program. The project would cost about 240000 dollars over five years with costs shared equally by Vanderbilt and NASA and run by Vanderbilt's School of Engineering. Dean Robert B. Kingsport Executive Trades Winter for Virgin Islands Cruise

Howard Ross, accounting head at American St. Gobhain in Kingsport, traded cold weather for a windjammer cruise in the Virgin Islands aboard the Maverick. The 11 day Vege Islands trip cost about 400 dollars, including airfare. Ross described the voyage as informal with passengers doing regular crew duties and enjoying sunny seas, tropical dances, and island explorations. He plans to return next year and hopes to bring his wife, who fears seasickness.
