Sailor Cuts Down Nazi Flag At German Consulate
A U S sailor Harold James Sturtevant 22 and companion E G Lackey 23 climbed to the ninth floor of the German consulate at 26 O’Farrell street San Francisco and cut down a four by eight foot swastika flag amid cheering crowds. Consul General Fritz Wiedemann said the flag marked the Reich’s 1871 founding anniversary and the incident drew about 2000 onlookers. Sturtevant and Lackey were charged with malicious mischief and held for the U S Navy, while four others were released. The lease on the building was canceled following the affair.
