Terrific Blast At Coal Mine Near Welch West Virginia
Seventy five miners escaped alive after a massive explosion at the No Hiva mine near Welch. About 287 men were inside when the blast hit around 9 30 a m. Shattered glass from nearby buildings injured workers as far as 1 000 feet away. Five men reported dead by one witness as rescuers fought through dust to reach the shaft 400 feet deep. Hospitals in Welch treated head injuries and shock while others were helped from the mine.
