President elect Roosevelt signals prompt action on foreign relations as he shapes plans for a new deal. He reviews conferences with Stimson Swanson and other diplomats while preparing for Washington and weighs farm relief tax policy and beer rate debates.
Washington June 14 A growing sentiment within the Senate Agriculture Committee favors broadening the domestic allotment farm relief bill to cover all agricultural products and to allow experimental application to one or more commodities before expansion. A proposed amendment would authorize the secretary of agriculture to operate bounty payments in connection with selected commodities. The farm mortgage measure, backed by the American Farm Bureau Federation, drew attention as hearings opened, while the overall senate remained hesitant about enacting the wide new program.
James Rey told Ohio Democrats that to end chaos and achieve national welfare the party must back cooperation and leadership from those who brought it to power. He urged unity, warned against selfish demands for aid, and endorsed Roosevelt’s planned constructive, active administration. He voiced doubt Congress will pass enough economic measures and called for Roosevelt to lead with a Democratic majority.
Franklin D Roosevelt and Mrs Roosevelt drew strong protest from women at a Prohibition Day luncheon by the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Rev Norman Vincent Peale condemned Mrs Roosevelt’s December 9 remarks on liquor and youth, questioning her grasp of American life and tax claims tied to beer.
Georgia Governor Eugene Talmadge says there will be no controversy with Michigan over the extradition of Willig Jesse Crawford a Fulton county auto theft and burglary suspect who escaped from a chain gang camp. Michigan Governor Comstock says extradition denied due to insufficient papers but not ruled out if perfected. The dispute centers on the papers and alleged brutality claims from Crawford at a hearing with Assistant Attorney General George Murphy. Canton Ohio Jan. 14 AP Mrs Eva Johnson sues to stop collection of last year taxes in Cherokee County claiming a 104 397 balance carried over from 1922 and that the tax rate of 12 mills for 1923 is improper. She seeks an injunction against the tax collector and county board insisting funds already in treasury cover expenses and that levies would profit the county at taxpayers’ expense.
President Hoover with budget chiefs Mills and J Clawson Hoop studied the fiscal picture and signaled a possible special message to Congress urging rapid budget balancing. Tax receipts lagged, the deficit neared 1.215 billion dollars, and debt funding options including liberty loans and short term notes were under review.
Geneva Jan 14 Leaders of the League of Nations pursue a conciliatory settlement of the Manchurian dispute. Dr Yen notified the League that China reserves the right to armed resistance against Japanese military action in Shanhaikwan. He accused Japan of unlawful use of the 1901 protocol privilege, slaughtering Chinese civilians, and massing near Shanhaikwan and along the Peiping-Mukden railway. The note was sent to Sir Eric Drummond and copies forwarded to Nan King and other signatories.
In Lippe a small German state with 164000 people and 115000 voters, Adolf Hitler campaigns to revive Nazi support after a Reichstag setback. Brownshirts flood Lippe house to house as nine parties vie for power, and victory or failure could reshape the Nazi role in national government.
Beatrice Ferguson Snipes, condemned to life in prison for slaying a rural officer, was moved to the state hospital maternity ward to await the birth of her child. Governor Blackwood commuted her death sentence last week. Her husband Glyde Snipes remains jailed, four days from release, as arrangements for the baby’s adoption are discussed.
