A Chicago milk blockade ended in a truce reached in a conference with Mayor Edward J. Kelly. Milk deliveries would resume in the afternoon after five days of violence that left Chicago nearly milkless. A naked madwoman found in a dirty room above a barn on the Barnes estate, Sophie Cerardi, 40, mental state in question as her husband Joseph Cerardi and housekeeper Miss Mary Griffin were arrested for false imprisonment. Leipz ig, Germany, Jan 10. AP Marinus Van der Lubbe, 24, a stonemason, was beheaded today for firing the Reichstag in Berlin last February. He confessed setting the fire but refused to name accomplices. Despite clemency appeals from the Dutch government, the sentence stood after a December conviction and the four co-defendants were acquitted. The execution occurred in the Leipzig district court yard as the prison bell tolled at 7 25 this morning.

Nashville January AP report notes a campaign reducing burley acreage to 24,000 acres this year, with an estimated 3.5 million dollars in payments over 1983 and 1984. E. Brehm AAA director says 90 percent of Tennessee growers signed reduction, payments include 50 dollars per acre, 10 percent of net value for 1983 and 10 percent of 1984 value after market closes.

Four quicks shooting desperadoes abducted 60 year old Mrs Roy Carpenter to shield them from police bullets in northeast Missouri. They stole a car in Hannibal and engaged officers in gun battles. Mrs Carpenter, hostage for over six hours, was left at Julius Jackson’s home four miles north of Monroe City after the escape. She described threats to take her children and said the robbers warned not to notify the police before midnight. The posse of peace officers and civilians hunted the four men across the region.
Esther Russo reported finding a three and one half carat diamond stick pin and must post $1,000 bond or surrender the pin to the civil sheriff while awaiting the rightful owner. A judge ordered the bond or custody swap pending possible return to the owner, with further action in six months if unclaimed.
President Roosevelt urged Congress to guarantee the principal of 4 000 000 000 in refinancing bonds for farm mortgages.
