Nashville attorney Dan Williams tonight entered the race for the Democratic nomination as governor of Tennessee. He becomes the first Democratic aspirant to toss his hat into the gubernatorial contest, with a primary set in August.
Judge Albert Williams, who floated a gubernatorial bid with Democratic backing, had previously been offered the Kingsport schools superintendent post. Local Democrats praised his honesty and ability and expect broad support if the party approves his candidacy.
Judge Williams 43, ex state high school inspector and former public instruction head, says he seeks the governorship with a campaign free of personal jabs, vowing to expose graft and hypocrisy while urging remedies. He criticizes party promises and foreign moneylenders, urging restoration of the state’s credit and obligations to citizens.
Britain declines to invoke the nine power treaty in the Manchurian conflict despite U.S. efforts. London cites Japan's open door pledge and equal trade in Manchuria, aligning with open door policy and the nine power treaty.
President Hoover promoted Theodore Roosevelt of Porto Rico to high colonial office and accepted Dwight F. Davis resignation as governor general. Davis cites personal reasons and will sail for Paris to visit his family. Roosevelt will assume the post immediately.
Chancellor Bruening said Germany cannot continue paying reparations and will urge abandonment at the Lausanne conference. Washington Jan 9 AP Amid a flood of debate the 4billion Reconstruction Finance Corporation bill moved toward a Senate vote on Monday after five hours of discussion. Amendments were offered but only two reached a vote and were rejected. Senator Bratton proposed irrigation loaning powers but failed by a narrow margin.
