Wise County deputy sheriff Tate Skeens shot three times by Harold Keee in a Can battle. Skeens transported to Norton Hospital in serious condition. Officers report the suspect killed a Duffield man during the encounter.
Bradley Harold age 30 farmer was killed at his home during a gun battle with Wise county officers and Deputy Tate Skeens. Deputy Skeens was fatally wounded, shot three times, and taken to Norton hospital with slim prospects of recovery. Sheriff Lee Skeens and deputies served a cattle stealing warrant at Harold’s residence and engaged in the exchange of fire.
Bert Acosta, described as not the famed aviator, was arrested today at his Rockville Centre home on an abandonment charge filed by his wife. He is jailed after an Nassau county grand jury indictment. The Acostas recently reconciled after a separation suit was dropped.
The railroad and public utilities commission held a hearing on January 8 on Atlantic and Pacific Stages petition for a certificate to operate a Nashville to Birmingham bus line via Columbia Pulaski and Ardmore.
Mrs. Fred Hoffman and her five year old daughter Virginia died from burns after kerosene used to start a wood fire exploded in their Wilmington residence. Another child, Harry, was not expected to survive.

In Rome on January 8 Princess Marie Jose of Belgium wed Crown Prince Humbert of Italy at the Pauline Chapel of the Quirinal Palace. A grand royal turnout from across Europe attended, with numerous kings, queens, princes and dignitaries, including King Albert and Queen Elizabeth of Belgium and Premier Mussolini. The couple then met Pope Pius XI for a private blessing before returning to the Quirinal for breakfast.
In Venice on January 8 there were sixty weddings around the same hour as the royal pairing of Princess Marie Jose of Belgium and Crown Humbert of Italy.
The Kingsport Retail Merchants Association summary shows a 45 percent membership rise to 94, 10 268 inquiries received, 3 000 new names taking total files to 17 000 in Kingsport's trading area. Assets exceed liabilities by 642.70 with support from officers and directors. The meeting followed the monthly club session at the Dutch Tea Room with a large turnout and brisk discussion of past year’s progress.
Representative Taylor of Tennessee told President Hoover to appoint an Interstate Commerce Commissioner from Tennessean leaders after R A Taylor’s term expired. Jones of Knoxville was nominated then withdrew. Taylor urged selection from Tennesseans including Ben Hooper and Representative Reece.
Rescue work in Algiers area was blocked as efforts continued to recover more than ten bodies from a wreck between Tunis and Algiers. At least twenty dead and as many injured, with ten bodies recovered so far.
