The Herff Jones Co produced the top bid of 181 by Robert W. Holt a 68 year old Federalsburg Maryland gas station owner. Eugene A. D Onofrio a 33 year old Baltimore gas station owner submitted 120 an ounce with maroon slacks and a feather jacket but it was not high enough for serious consideration. Dresden Bank submitted nearly half of all offers. Officials said the number of successful bids would be determined later today. Simon noted Americans had not rushed into gold as it pays no interest or dividends and drains money from circulation.
