A severe cold wave hits much of the United States with subzero temps in Nebraska and the Dakotas, 60 mph winds along the Atlantic coast, and ships driven ashore. Four hours in icy water saved one fisherman after his boat foundered. In the Southwest snow drifts, blizzard conditions, and rail delays ripple nationwide.
Commanding notes describe a high altitude endurance flight with seven prefueling connectors and a Hi engine craft. Nashville January 7 The Tennessee general assembly faces a busy legislative agenda including the 7,500 mile highway system plan and departmental priorities. Sam R. Bratton of Ohio County won the nomination for speaker of the State Senate in a Democratic caucus vote 14 to 1 defeating James J. Bean of Lynchburg. Bratton’s selection signals a likely smooth path for Ernest Haston, the incumbent, as Secretary of State Eugene Anderson withdrew from the administration ticket, avoiding a deadlock over W. K. Abernathy.
Democratic leaders convene to pick speakers and clerks of both Houses as Governor Horton seeks power to push a legislative program. Highway Department leads a 7600 mile system plan that could require borrowing funds if finished in a reasonable time.
President elect Hoover opens Washington headquarters at the Mayflower hotel for a week of conferences with campaign supporters on cabinet and appointments. Cowboy promoter George L. Rickard known for turning boxing champions and fueling Miami boxing scenes died in Allison's hospital after an appendicitis operation. His body was taken to New York for burial as mourners paid last respects.
Stanton China Jan 7 The American team picture Ben Hur was forbidden after several days in crowded theatres. The government stopped the production saying it was Christian propaganda that would mislead people into superstition, not tolerated in the era of revolutionary enlightenment.
True bills against three principals were returned by York county grand jury after brief deliberation in a witchcraft case. Indictments include murder and manslaughter charges over the killing of Nelson Beymeyer, a 60 year old recluse farmer. Blymer, Heys, and Curry pleaded not guilty as trials proceed amid rural fears of hex doctors and black arts.
Grand Duke Nicholas commander of Russian armies in World War I and claimant to the Russian throne died at 72 after moving from Paris for a milder climate. Present at his death were Grand Duchess Anastasia Montenegro and other royals. He survived numerous assassination attempts and became a monarchist symbol in exile. Continued on page four.
