Elaine, 20, met Smith as a Yankton freshman. she had studied at Maryland University and was convalescing in Kingsport. Smith plans to finish his college course at Yankton where he will reside with his bride.
The Kingsport Selective Service Draft Board names J. W. Harrison chief clerk and W. L. Holyoke becomes board member as Holyoke moves to Public Works director post. The board will mail 150 questionnaires weekly until 4,000 remaining registrants receive blanks, with 1,014 white and 185 colored questionnaires mailed to date.
Tempe Arizona New Year's Day wedding disclosed by Justice of the Peace Paul V McCaw. Wedding in Echo Canyon with ten in attendance. Bride Helen Warner Vanderbilt and Jack Frye president of Trans continental and Western Air Inc both have been married twice before. Vanderbilt divorce from Cornelius Vanderbilt Jr in Carson City Nevada recently.
City Recorder J R Pecktal announced 1940 was the best tax collection year in Kingsport history with 312 788 collected of a 349 932 levy as of Jan 1 1941 Delinquent taxes totaled 37 144 or 11 87 percent of the levy compared with 29 755 collected of 342 587 and 43 832 delinquent or 14 37 percent in 1939 Since 1917 Kingsport’s delinquent sum through 1940 reached 103 900 with 37 143 of that year’s taxes delinquent
Dublin reports new charges that Berlin directed bombing and mine drops against Ireland. Five identified German origin explosions span Curragh of Kildare Julians town Duleek Borris and Enniskerry Wicklow with a Dublin district bomb injuring over a dozen and three killed in Borris.
Sergt. William C. O Lee becomes acting Middle Tennessee chief of the state highway patrol as Sergt. Sam Johnston and three other patrolmen are disciplined for shooting craps in the patrol office. Johnston is relieved of division command and demoted to patrolman. Crum is reduced to patrolman. Bibb and Dispayne are suspended. Johnston's appointment as Middle Tennessee chief took effect January 1, succeeding Pace, who becomes a patrol sergeant at Johnson City.
British report Bremen, Germany, as Reichs worst bombed city with factories, docks, rail yards, and naval bases engulfed in flames. While Berlin raid losses included casualties in London and Bristol, RAF fights continued. two raiders shot down, one captured, one British fighter missing. Weather hindered daytime raids.
