Moody Dunbar Pepper Co. will send a representative to Sullivan County for three days this week to discuss 1965 pepper growing contracts with farmers. County Agent J. W. McClain said the agent will be in Bristol today, Blountville Wednesday, and at the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce office Friday. About 300 acres of bell and Pimento peppers were under contract in Sullivan County last year and are processed locally for a growing market.

Tennessee Winter Wheat Planting Down From Last Year
Nashville reports the Tennessee Crop Reporting Service estimated 160 000 acres seeded for winter wheat this fall, 1 percent below the 1943 average. Production as of December 1 is about 3 680 000 bushels, 15 percent below 1964 but 10 percent above the 1959-63 average.

Bacterial Spot Stays In Field
KNOXVILLE. The bacterial Spot organism in peppers may carry over in the field for at least one year. Growers should insist on plants grown in artes known to be free of the spot organism. Most peppers this past season were free from infection and yields were high where disease was not present. Symptoms include severe leaf drop, spotted and puckered leaves high on the plant, and very lightness in new growth.

BLACKSBURG Virginia Tech forester C E Gill says Southern pine plywood could become a major enterprise as six mills for making plywood from southern pine near completion or under construction. He notes construction grade sheathing plywood will dominate and anticipates a wide market for South produced plywood as softwood this region previously relied on West Coast manufacture or imports.

The Tennessee Crop Reporting Service notes pre 3 504 088 broiler chicks hatched in November down 4 percent from October but 11 percent above November of 1963. January to November totals show 42 351 008 broiler chicks hatched, up 4 percent from a year ago. Egg type chicks in November rose to 20 000 from 5 900 in 1963. The softwood plywood industry is seen expanding as southern pine plywood gains acceptability equal to Douglas fir. timber supplies are ample for two more plants.

Tennessee crop reports show the Dec 1963 through Nov 1964 pig crop at 1,795,000 head, 12 percent below 1963 and 14 percent under the 1938-62 average. June-November farrowings totaled 126,000 sows, 11 percent below a year earlier, with 7.3 pigs per litter the highest on record. Nationally the June-November crop is down 8 percent to 40,436,000 head.

Harvest data show strawberries for fresh market and processing from 3500 acres in 1964 vs 4200 in 1963. Total production reached 9,450,000 pounds, down 22 percent from the 1983 crop and 7 percent below the long term average. Total value totaled $1,740,000, down 15 percent from 1967 and 45 percent below average.
USDA Plans Major Changes to Save Money
