Cherbourg France January 4 A French liner the L Atlantique operating to South America caught fire while en route from Pauillac to Le Havre. The burning ship was abandoned after two hours and crew of about 240 were rescued by the Ruhr of Hamburg American line. Several ships stood by as a tug from Brest joined others in rescue and the fire continued as the vessel headed for Le Havre for overhaul.
A 16 member Georgia group asks incoming legislators to investigate penal conditions after national publicity of alleged torture in prison camps. Photographs accompany the request, which urges a vigorous impartial inquiry to establish facts and reforms.
Portland barber Emma McCutchan filed suit against Everett Wilkins for 8 dollars and 50 cents for barbering services. She claimed each shave involved dropping a match in a box to record the bill. Wilkins admitted the debt and pledged to pay.

Directors of General Foods Corporation declared a regular quarterly dividend of 51 cents a share. The payment date is February 1 to holders of record as of January 1.
Secretary Doak designated Murray Garson as a special assistant to pursue locating the birthplace of Harry Gergu son, described as a self-styled descendant of the Romanoffs, in Washington on January 4.
Authorities moved quickly in Christian county to curb violence in the central Illinois coal miners war. Two people, including a woman, were killed and several others injured as street fighting flared again near Kin said areas. National guard units were ordered to restore order while anti-picketing and anti meeting measures were issued.
Nashville January 4. Democratic general assembly members hold a joint caucus tonight to nominate candidates for Tennessee treasurer secretary of state and state comptroller. James J. Bean of Lynchburg seeks treasurer with Charlies H. Nash Jr. of Memphis also listed. Ernest N. Haston seeks another term as secretary of state, facing Herman Cravens Paris, va M. Warren Dyersburg and George L. Stockton Jamestown challengers. Roy Wallace of Lenoir City aims for another two-year term as state comptroller.
A Nashville telegram from Rep. E H Crump attacked Ernest N Haston, candidate for re election as secretary of state, claiming Haston benefited from taxpayers money while on the state payroll. Frank Rice released the message, urging Gov elect McAlister to reject Haston and accusing him of aligning with power interests and the Lea Horton Caldwell methods.
Edward Maloney the Casa Blanca doorman who served Fay for years is charged with shooting Larry Fay at Fay’s New York nightclub. He claims memory gaps due to heavy drinking after a wage dispute with Fay over admission control. Police say Maloney, a former Syracuse resident, fled, later surrendering after 48 hours.
A six man gang armed with sawed off shotguns robbed a railroad depot of three pouches of registered mail. They entered the office while workers loaded sacks on a train and escaped in autos, aided by armed guards. The mail’s final destination was unclear.
In Los Angeles two daring bandits seized a registered mail pouch at the Southern Pacific Railroad station from two armed guards. The pouch contained mail and securities destined for San Joaquin Valley points, with an unofficial value around ten thousand dollars. Truck driver B J Blanton and guards Harry Edwards and Conrad Pillman were involved when a small black sedan arrived and the bandits used shotguns to take the pouch and disarm the guards.
Nashville Tenn June reports the senate met briefly with no third reading bills ready and adjourned to tomorrow. Visitors included former Senator Scott P. Fitzhugh of Shelby. The House wrangled over seating arrangements causing a 30 minute delay as Bert Dedman announced a new layout. House members argued about desks and aisles before Republican leader Gilbert Goodwin urged moving to business. Both chambers agreed to trim expenses while awaiting Governor-elect Hill McAlister and his economy message, with continued coverage on page eight.

In Memphis on January 4, three Tennessee men Ernest Crook, his son B. C. Crook, and son-in-law W. R. Blakey faced serious charges after reporting a fatal public safety incident. B. C. Crook admitted striking Harry Ross, a 26 year old farmer, as Ross attempted to flee from their vehicle while allegedly pursuing an attempted assault at his home involving a girl.
Albert Banks 24 of Cocke County died and Robert Hassell and W C Keener of Knoxville were injured when their car ignored a stop sign at the Munson Street crossing and was struck by Southern Railway train No. 16. Cal T Jones, cross ing watchman, said the car stalled onto the track yesterday.
