Kingsport coal dealers report severe shortages as a second snowfall drives demand. Orders stretch back two to three months with most shipments at only a fraction of last year. Restrictions eased but mining output remains down, leaving dealers unable to fill booked work and homeowners awaiting fuel.
Washington president Truman prepared a radio address on the whole labor situation. The half hour talk was to begin at 8 p m CST after he finished meetings with callers following a four day river cruise. The speech aims to boost public support for his legislative program stalled in Congress.
An ex Army sergeant asked if Army clothing could be donated to Europe relief. Kingsport Church Committee for Overseas Relief welcomed GI boots coats and gloves. London prison authorities executed American born radio propagandist William Joyce known as Lord Haw Haw at Wandsworth Prison shortly after 9 am. He was convicted of high treason by a British court and followed the execution of John Amery on similar charges. The death occurred with few officials present as Joyce walked to the gallows and the trap was sprung by I Pierrepoint.

Testimony opened the war crimes trial with Maj. Gen. Toshimitsu Takatsu saying Homma’s headquarters were close to the death march route and that Homma traveled 20 miles while prisoners were driven along the highway. He described brutal conditions at O’Donnell camp with daily deaths, insufficient medicine, and scant water.
Five FBI agents and local officials will lead a police training school in Kingsport from January 14 to 25. Sessions cover courtesy, jurisdiction of federal agencies, traffic problems, and burglary investigations with speakers including Judge Shelburne Ferguson and City Attorney John Todd.
