Soldier kills two children at Fort Moultrie tragedy
Fort Moultrie, Charleston, January 2. First Sergeant Charles W. Long of the Eighth Infantry fatally injured his 11 year old daughter and eight year old son with a hatchet and critically wounded his wife before attempting his own death. Investigators cannot explain the act but deem a sudden mania possible. Long, 51, married during the Rhine occupation after World War I. both children were born in Germany. The killings occurred at the Long home on the army post. the incident was not fully explained until 8:30 this morning. (Continued on page six)
