Times-News 1970 Award Winners Honored on New Year’s Day

Dr Merritt B Rhode honored for Bays Mountain Park work and many collaborators while Mrs Thomas Williams Sr widow of the Kingsport City Mission founder is recognized for keeping the agency alive. Each recipient receives a $100 charity donation as chosen by the Times-News editorial board.

Area's New Year snow brings slick roads and minor crashes

Snow lingered across the region with depths from three inches at the airport to up to 12 inches in Wise, Scott, Dickenson, Lee and Russell Counties. Driving was hazardous with numerous minor auto accidents and two families escaped serious injuries. Police charged a 63 year old man with failure to yield after a collision at Eastman Road and Redwood Drive. Forecasters expect improving roads and mostly sunny weather for New Year’s Day with a high near 49 and a low around 9 for tonight.

Truce Attacks Leave Three Miners Dead in Virginia Coal Fields

A team from United Mine Workers probes three fatal accidents in Clinchfield Coal Co. mines in Clinchwood and nearby areas. Victims include Herbert Bradley 52 of Dante Cecil Meloy 40 of Trammel and Floyd Stratton McCoy 34 of Duty. First baby of 1971 born at Halston Watley hospital

The first baby of 1971, a four pound three ounce boy named Kevin DeWayne Light, was born at 3:20 am to Linda Boate Light and Eugene Light. Safety check postponed at Finley Coal Mine blast site

UPI reports holiday delays halted a planned federal safety inspection at Finley Coal Co. in Hyden Kentucky after 38 miners died in an underground explosion last week. Inspectors from Barbourville faced holiday staffing gaps and traveled later to probe the blast cause amid electrical system fault theories. Times-News price increases for home delivery

Effective Jan 3 the home delivered price of the daily and Sunday Times News rises to 70 cents a week due to rising operating costs including a $7 per ton newsprint hike. Part of the increase funds the carrier salesman’s extra commission to recruit a top seller. Single copy prices stay at 10 cents for the Times and News and 25 cents for the Sunday edition.
