The Miami News reports four Miami men found about 9 million in Spanish coins in a sunken palloon near Grand Bahama Island, roughly 70 miles off Florida. The find could be the largest treasure discovery in history, with coins of gold and silver unearthed near the Bahamas.
A new battalion of Vietnamese troops was airlifted by 48 U S Army helicopters into the Binh Gia area. U S and Vietnamese forces bombarded the Rubber plantations as guerrillas resisted, with 44 killed 94 wounded and 47 missing on the battleground. Two American crewmen were confirmed dead and two more missing suspected killed or captured.
A series of Pacific storms brought a wet New Year to the West Coast yet left some areas brighter than expected. Kingsport saw rain, with 44 degree low on Jan 1 1965 and forecasts of a warm rise. Floods across California Oregon Washington Idaho and Nevada left 41 dead and $700 million in damages while coastal shipping and inland towns faced supplies shortages.
Amid floods the Air Force relief fleet logged 67 missions into snowy canyons to reach marooned towns like Somes Bar and Salmon. Helicopters faced high winds and fog as they ferried supplies to isolated communities and evacuated the seriously ill, with crews working from a staging area near Happy Camp.
Sullivan stock owners fear rabid fox incident as neighbor Rutherford Duncan shot a fox on Gravely Road. Paul McClure sought health department action to remove the head for rabies testing while officials warned against hauling an entire carcass. Health officials preferred head removal with disposal on site and questioned disposal methods.
John G Bates II, named First Baby of 1965, drew a nurse crowd at Holston Valley Community Hospital after a seven day overdue birth. The infant yawned as a photographer sought a portrait while his mother Mrs John G Barnes Jr noted the win with mixed pride and humor about tax deductions and the year change.
Long Island family the Strivett s lost their Warrick Drive home on Christmas Eve in a fire that destroyed clothing, furniture and gifts. Neighbors and local businesses reacted, with Paul Dykes Furniture delivering a seven piece kitchen set couch and bed and later an electric stove. The home was temporarily provided by the Fraziers as aid poured in from Kingsport area residents. The Strivetts include Mr and Mrs Richard Strivett and five children Ruby 12 Richard 10 Paul 7 Carrol 9 and Ward 1. In London a New Year's Eve crowd faced a shotgun assault as six men were arrested in connection with a wave of armed violence. Herbert H Croome, a 40 year old barman, is charged with attempted murder alongside David Heckman wounded in the incident. A seventh man remains in custody for questioning while two other victims, including a man and a woman, were wounded. Police report two shots fired at close range from a porch area as suspects fled. Rose, involved in the case, was not struck.
The UPI report says five people were killed when a Piper Tripacer crashed into a tree near Bill Athy Mountain in Coffee County Tennessee. The victims include a Calvert City, Kentucky family. Bodies were to be transported to a Benton Kentucky funeral home for burial. The wreck occurred while en route from Rome Georgia to Paducah Kentucky for a holiday trip, with fog and low clouds reported at takeoff. The pilot was believed to be Carl Gilman. passengers included Lois Lee, 7 months old, Bertha Harrell and her children Elizabeth Ann, 2, and Wayne Harrell Jr. The Civil Air Patrol noted poor weather conditions at takeoff.
Three Belgrade backed bishops sought control of the Serbian Orthodox diocese in the United States and Canada with $10 million in church property. Judge Philip W. Yager ruled religious freedom does not extend to church assets and barred further moves. The diocese, based at St Sava Monastery in Libertyville Illinois, hailed the decision as a major victory for free Orthodox churches against communist control.
Seven employees of a wholesale grocery firm in Nashville area were arrested, with investigations continuing for more arrests in connection with a theft totaling about 60 000 dollars of merchandise over four years. Individuals named include Gene... Autacs... Walker... Majors... Blejors... Brooks... Garrard, all linked to nearby cities, as police reported ongoing efforts to arrest others who allegedly purchased the stolen goods.
