Traffic deaths across the nation during New Year’s holiday appear below normal for a non-holiday period. Counts show 101 highway fatalities since 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, lower than last week’s Christmas period, with projections that 1963 may exceed 1962’s record toll as snow disrupts travel in the southern storm belt.
Associated Press recounts New Year celebrations as world leaders in the Kremlin and around the globe toast 1964. Khrushchev and Johnson exchange greetings, pleads for nuclear restraint, and leaders like De Gaulle and Kai-shek send messages of peace amid political maneuvering and public revelry.
Howard S. Witt and John Wooten will be sworn in as Law Court Judge and Attorney General of the 2nd Judicial Circuit at City Hall. Judge John R. Todd will administer Witt's oath with Judge H. Coneway Smith conducting Wooten's. Appointed by Governor Clement on December 20, they fill vacancies until the county general election next August.
Federal Mediation and Conciliation service will hold a mediation session Tuesday at 10 am in Washington with management and officials of Kingsport Press Inc. The strike against Kingsport Press has been ongoing since last March, while operations continue.
Three Greek Cypriot monks died and two were wounded in an assault on the Orthodox Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Galaeto near Nicosia and Limassol. One monk injured. 110 monks reportedly in residence. British troops to bolster security amid Cyprus tensions. Soviet Union warned it may back Greece in UN proceedings.
Kingsport crews opened the new year by battling snowfall to keep streets clear. West, director of Public Works, noted 1 truck and five plows operated, about 60,000 pounds of salt used, and sawdust hauled. Snowfall began near midnight, with lower temperatures hindering plowing, and downtown parking limits after midnight remain in effect except near all night establishments.
A fierce snowstorm and bracing cold hit the eastern United States with blizzards and drifting snow. Cities from Meridian and Huntsville in Alabama to Nashville and Chattanooga in Tennessee reported heavy accumulations while road closures and travel advisories spread from Alabama northward. Highs near the 20s and 30s dominated the forecast as warmer air and rain teased some relief yet left most highways treacherous and many counties weighing school closings or delays.
Polio immunization drives will run Sunday from 1 to 5 PM at multiple sites including Kingsport City Hall Ketron Lynn View and Sullivan high schools and Mason and Dixon Terminal Eastman Road. The Sabin oral vaccine requires three types given in sequence and at separate intervals to achieve complete protection.
