Kingsport’s 1923 year brought new plants and expansions at Mead Fibre, Eastman, and other facilities, with several miles of paving, a tobacco market, new church, and a rising population. Most plants operated at or near capacity, boosting employment and retail business after two lean years.
Kingsport public schools will not reopen until Monday January 7, after a holiday extension due to mumps. Superintendent S W Gentry announced the change urged by city health officer Dr T B Yancey. Teachers notified. Blountville and Pikeville games postponed. Kingsport may face Blountville on January 12.
A new residential district opens as the subdivision undergoes development. Local planners announce phased construction and roadwork to support the growing community. Residents anticipate improved services and enhanced neighborhood amenities as the project progresses.
Frankfort announces the appointment of a state election commissioner for the Richmond Register publisher, with a $3,000 per year salary. Saufley, a Democratic leader from the Eighth district, is noted as a vice president of the Kentucky Press Association.
Tuskegee Institute figures show lynchings in the United States fell by more than 50 percent in 1923 from 1922, with 28 deaths that year. Of the victims, most were Black men. two women were included, and a few cases involved White individuals. Mississippi and Florida had eight each, Georgia four, Texas two, Virginia one, and Oklahoma two linked to assaults on law officers or other offenses.
In Louisville Kentucky Governor Fields extended the time to obtain licenses, freeing about 8000 Jefferson County automobile owners from arrest. The action relieves many drivers facing enforcement in coming weeks.
In Zanesville Ohio Arthur Millfelt Robert Goodrich and a third local man died in an automobile collision near the city today. Five others were badly injured in the crash as authorities began investigations.
