Commerce Department predicts housing downturn in 1960

The Commerce Department foresees a 1960 housing slow down after 1959's nine year high. Private starts for 1959 are tipped at 2,325,000 with 1960 projected around 1,200,000, reflecting tighter mortgage credit and a shift toward more apartment construction. Officials expect a leveling off rather than a steep drop, noting government stimulus earlier in 1958 influenced a temporary surge.
