Allied airmen downed eight Japanese fighters over New Guinea and three Zeros over New Britain while ground forces tightened the envelopment near Buna. Hudson bombers and Beaufighters pressed strikes on Timor and coast villages as a 6,060-ton cargo vessel was hit.

Aunt Returns Child Three Year Old Kenneth Morrison

Kenneth Morrison, 3, who disappeared from his Davenport area home Christmas night, was found safe Saturday night with his aunt Edna Main, 17, sister of Mrs Morrison. Main, who faced a kidnapping complaint, told investigators she had been doing housework while the boy accompanied her on the disappearances around the tri cities. Morrison’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Melii Morrison, said the aunt had been paroled from a Dixon State Hospital prior to living with them.

Fortresses Blast Japs At Rabaul On Christmas Day

Washington AP reports Army Flying Fortresses from Guadalcanal carried out a Christmas Day strike on Japanese ships at Rabaul New Britain. Three direct hits on a large transport ship were noted as enemy fighters = repelled. The raid signals a campaign to pressure Rabaul from Solomons and Australia with air power.

Quiet Christmas Reported in Kingsport

Kingsport police described Christmas as unusually quiet with one automobile accident and no injuries. Five people were arrested Friday for public intoxication. Holston Valley Community Hospital treated three with minor injuries and admitted one in critical condition from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Coleman of Clinchport Va was the critical patient. Other injuries included powder burns to a 17 year old from Hiltons Va, a forehead cut to a rider, and a head laceration to a 24 year old Bailey from Highland Park after a strike in Long Island.

Stork Wins Race Baby Born On Vacant Lot

In Cookeville Tennessee a 33 year old mother Mrs Beecher Grasty gave birth to a baby girl on a vacant lot behind the city school Sunday night unable to reach shelter. Neighbors summoned a physician and ambulance but the baby arrived before aid. The child was normal and the mother and newborn later returned home and were reported doing well.

Four Christmas Babies Born At Local Hospital

Christmas day arrivals at Halstay Valley Community Hospital blessed four couples with newborns. Three boys and a girl were born on December 25, named for families: Robert Sheen and wife at Bloomingdale Road, a girl. Enis Edison and wife at Graverly Road, a boy. Herbert Matlock and wife at Parl Drive, a boy. John A.J Jones and wife at Lyn Avenue, a boy.

Snores Too Loud Army Recruit Is Discharged

Fredan California based recruit Leonard D Williams slept through basic training with 28 days and eight charges in sleeping quarters. Snoring blamed on a childhood ailment, he was moved through hospital isolation and finally dispersed after attempts to find quarters where sleep was possible.

Three Newspapers Raise Prices Nationwide

The Cincinnati Enquirer will raise Sunday edition prices from 20 to 22 cents effective Sunday January 3, with 16 cent rates elsewhere. Daily editions stay at 3 cents. Chicago papers the Sun and Tribune also boost newsstand prices to 3 cents due to rising production and distribution costs.

Nazis Battle for Medjez El Bab Ridge Ends In Inch by Inch Fight

British guards in Tunisia fought through rain soaked mud on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to gain and lose key heights northeast of Medjez El Bab. German reinforcements counterattacked and held the lower ridges while the final push secured most tops except the extreme summit. Allied observers said the engagement was the largest in three weeks on the Medjez El Bab front.

Admiral Henri Giraud Named North Africa High Commissioner
