Washington observes a somber Christmas as President Roosevelt plans a daytime broadcast and family gathering at the White House. War production halts Friday to aid mobilization, while troops abroad receive holiday greetings and care packages.
The Kingsport Times will not publish Friday to allow employees to celebrate Christmas with their families. Mechanical problems from the war cause the second comic and feature page to be missing today. Publication resumes Sunday as usual.
Soldier Luther Curran returned on a ten day furlough from Moore General Hospital Swannanoa NC to spend Christmas with friends in Kingsport. He served in the Army Signal Corps in North Africa and Casablanca. Curran, a former Wingsport Press employee, earned the Order of the Purple Heart after severe burns and leakage from torpedo attacks during the invasion. He recalls the push to seize North Africa and cites delays in supplies and constant enemy fire. Curran expects temporary stateside duty after recovery. The Inter state Commerce Commission announced a January hearing date in Paducah on the Illinois Central Railroad proposal to abandon a line between Kovil East Cairo.
Kingsport Civitan Club presented 259.82 in Christmas gifts to the USO via H. J. Shivell, president of the Community Chest, bringing total Civitan contributions to 338.72. The funds come from Sullivan county scrap iron drives that boosted East Tennessee’s scrap totals and earned Gov. Prentice Cooper a Patriotic Service certificate for Civitan Club president 3. W. West.
Washington reports circulate on Capitol Hill of a resumption of a secret clash between military and civilian production authorities. A congressional source says War Production Board Chairman Donald M. Nelson may extend civilian jurisdiction over army and navy contracts with Nelson and WPB vice president Charles Wilson pushing to ensure alignment with wartime production. The rumor suggests military orders could move to factories not now handling army work.
Allied forces reached Dakar as part of a widening North Africa campaign. The arrival, including air, sea, and land troops, aims to integrate airports and harbor facilities into the broader plan to speed mon aboard Africa and curb submarine traffic. Axis actions across Tunisia and Libya continue amid patrol activity. Rommel’s forces are said to be reinforcing defenses while the Eighth Army advances toward Tripoli. Washington set January 6 for the new Congress session with President Roosevelt to address the nation.
Navy bombers renewed attacks on Munda airfield in the Solomons. Divers from Henderson Field on Guadalcanal conducted the strike, marking the second day of assaults since December 9. The force also strafed the airfield on New Georgia Island. results were not reported.
Washington figures toward tougher penalties for wilfully manufacturing and delivering inferior materials to the armed forces. Rep Hobbs says current law is too lenient and proposes life term or death for such wartime fraud. Justice officials report about 300 wartime fraud cases under review, with three indictments to date.
Police blocked all roads into Nishacoquillas Valley in Mifflin county to isolate a smallpox outbreak that reached 14 cases. Troopers turned back canvas-covered wagons bound for the Christmas market. Dr. J. F. Brown said more cases are expected and all confirmed patients thus far are adults.
Bristol officials and local business leaders pressed senators and congressmen to reverse an OPA order that cuts Tennessee gas coupon value to three gallons in Sullivan county. The Chamber of Commerce urged Bristol and Sullivan county be moved to the four gallon area, while officials argued the measure unfairly singles out Sullivan county. About 75,000 people could be affected, many residents working in Bristol. Also, Nashville obituary notes Mrs Amanda Williams, former Nashville matron of Eastern Star, died.
