South Vietnam Eyes Freeof POWs Amid Tet Talks

Saigon announced it would free up to fifty allied and disabled North Vietnamese prisoners of war as a humanitarian gesture and urged Hanoi to respond in kind. An Air Force mission rescued two U S airmen from a damaged RF-4C Phantom over Laos as others bombed and strafed enemy lines. South Vietnam named Prime Minister Tran Van Lam said POWs would be released on the Ben Hai River after verification.

Kitty Hawk Pheht Will Be America's Third To Moon

Washington reports in a cautious briefing that Apollo 4 under Alan Shepard will be America's third lunar mission with a $15 million safety upgrade package. The crew includes Edgar Mitchell and Stuart Roosa, with plans for two moonwalks and a near Maura crater landing. Grounded since 1961, Shepard returns to space aboard Antares, while quarantine procedures and public health safeguards aim to prevent illness during the mission.

Desegregation Fallout Hits West Tennessee Teachers

A report by the Jace Relations Information Center, under HEW contract, finds dismissal and demotion of black teachers due to desegregation are concentrated in rural West Tennessee. While Knoxville Chattanooga Nashville show few cases, Fayette Haywood and Lauderdale counties report widespread displacement with 18 teachers dismissed and as many demoted. 14 ordered reinstated by federal court.

Manpower Bill Dies in House Despite Senate Ambition

Congress defeated a 5 hundred million manpower bill in the Senate 48 to 35, short of the override margin. The measure would have funded a three year, New Deal style public service employment program for jobless workers. Senator Kennedy argued it offered opportunity through public service and training. In the House, an authorization bill of 3.5 billion to aid school desegregation passed 154 to 77, sending it to the Senate amid uncertain prospects.

Ames Green Beret recalls Son Tay raid secrecy and escapes

Sergeant A Thomas of Ames 22 a member of the Army Special Forces recalls the November Son Tay raid on a Hanoi area POW camp. He says secrecy was total and there was no leak despite prisoners being moved before the rescue. He notes training at Ft. Bragg Eglin AFB and the mission’s perilous, precise timing and team effort.

Elks Lodges Lose Licenses Over Racial Membership Rule

Augusta Maine UPI Meine's 14 Elks lodges cannot receive liquor licenses for 1971 due to the national Elks association rule restricting membership to white American men. Licenses expire January 1. Augusta lodge president Tom Morgan called the ruling devastating and said individual judges had no authority to change national policy.
