Major Charles A. Shepard, army medical officer, was found guilty of poisoning his second wife. The verdict sentenced him to life imprisonment with no capital punishment. Jurors had previously deliberated for two days amid a possible deadlock in Kansas City Kansas.
More than three hundred inmates from all state prisons are released on Christmas parole for fifteen days. Most have served long terms with meritorious conduct, including some life terms and second degree murder or burglary. about ten percent are lifers. No work. special meals and entertainment planned.

Hodge, 17, died when his car veered off a bridge into a creek. Homer Belew, 40s, fell from a bluff near Lawrenceburg, and W. D. Juckett, 44, died in Clarksville after a crash with a tobacco truck. a female passenger, Lady Thompson, was seriously hurt.
