Kingsport Banker W E Newell Dies At 70
W E Ed Newell 70 longtime First National Bank chairman collapsed at work and died of a heart attack in Kingsport. A Texas native, he moved to Memphis then to Kingsport in 1958 after leading roles in banking and law. He led community efforts with United Fund Chamber of Commerce and Holston Valley Hospital.

Comptroller To Probe Governor Spending Audits Begun
The Tennessee Comptroller will audit Gov. Ray Blanton's expense spending after a request by the Legislature's Fiscal Review Committee. The probe covers luxury out-of-state travel and large hotel and limousine charges, plus funds shifts from Dunn's era.

Man Pleads Guilty To Posing As Agent Beasley
Howard Oscar Goodman pleaded guilty in Kingsport court to attempting to learn about a former tenant by posing as Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Agent Beasley. He was arrested after a Kingsport officer and a sergeant intercepted the impersonation, receiving a $50 fine and probation for a misdemeanor.
