Blanton's Washington hire raises cost and conflicts
Tennessee Governor Ray Blanton's office arranged a $16,800 a year part time administrative aide job in Washington for Karen S. Flint, who has received 32 state paid telephone calls from the governor's office, a Nashville Learjet, or a Tokyo hotel room. The Appalachian Regional Commission hired her after Blanton asked about the position. Blanton declined comment.

Three Men Held After Norton Shooting Incident
In Norton Ramsey section three men were arrested after a coal truck crossed a picket line at a Norton mine. Michael Jack Quillen faced charges of possession and firing a loaded weapon, Mack Johnson was charged with possession, and Edwin A. Kettle was charged with blocking the highway on a warrant.

Bristol Raytheon Wins 69.7 Million Dragon Missile Contract
Raytheon Co in Bristol received a 69.7 million follow-on contract from the U S Army Missile Materiel Readiness Command in Huntsville Alabama for Dragon Missile production. The award preserves Bristol employment with no new jobs created, according to Vincent J Murray Bristol and Huntsville operations manager. The Dragon is an about 31 pound man portable anti tank missile designed to replace the 90 mm recoiless rifle.

Rescue Fund Surpasses Ten Thousand Dollars in Donations
The Christmas Rescue Fund exceeded its $10,000 goal thanks to contributions from residents of Fast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia with gifts reaching as far as Alaska. Funds will aid about 1,500 to 2,000 people. baskets average $40 for a family of four, and up to $100 for larger families. Additional contributions continue to arrive from local groups and individuals.
