Russian forces pressing on multiple fronts since late November maneuver to breach German lines. Moscow reports heavy Russian artillery and counterattacks, while German losses mount though winter conditions limit large Nazi offensives.
Allied and French forces report destroying a German motor column northeast of Medjez El Bab and an entire troop train between Sousse and Stax. French armored car and fighters with American air support shattered an Italian column near Faid. Six light armored cars waited to ambush the train, and only 18 Germans escaped. No other action reported along the northern front.
Adolf Hitler named Anton Mussert a Nazi Fuehrer for the Netherlands as Axis propaganda claimed France would cooperate with Germany under Ptain. Reports said Muss you would help implement new decrees, likely tightening Nazi rule and anti Jewish measures in Holland while Tass cited mobilization of 250 000 Dutch workers for German forces.
Frederick County game warden Benjamin F. Phobus and Durwood W. Kettels attempted to arrest Shores and another Norland Ferry man for trapping muskrats out of season along the Potomac River. Shores struck Kettels with a club and was shot in the leg by Phobus during the firefight. Shores was later captured on the Virginia side while the other suspect remained at large.
The Supreme Court agreed to review a federal ruling that blocked enforcement of chain broadcasting restrictions. NBC and CBS had sued to stop the FCC from enforcing the rules. a New York three judge panel held the FCC action authorized by the Federal Communications Act. Enforcement was paused until February 2 to allow an appeal.
A deliverers' strike in New York blocked most major dailies from reaching newsstands and homes, prompting War Labor Board intervention. The WLB called the stoppage a violation of the no strike pledge, while the independent union claimed no binding pledge. Morning papers and Manhattan afternoon editions faced widespread delays and likely further distribution disruption.
Four motorists in Kingsport pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and were fined 50 dollars each by Judge Napoleon Bond. Licenses were revoked for one year. Additional fines included 15 for public intoxication and 15 for speeding. Bond forfeitures included several amounts for various offenses such as possessing whisky and running a stop sign.
Funeral services held Friday for Geneveria Inez Bloomer 15 who died at her home Tuesday. Rev Bear and Alec Willis conducted the service. Burial followed at the family cemetery in Blackwater with Fairview High School classmates serving as flower girls and pallbearers.
Market report from Cincinnati shows hogs salable 2 700 with top 14 95 for 166 300 lb and 18 50 for 450 260 lb. Cattle and calves hear steady to sharply higher with choice steers 16.00 and best cows 12 00 to 12 59. Sheep steady with good kinds around 15 60 and ewes down to 6 00. Receipts limited, demand active across hogs cattle and sheep.
Allied forces renewed pressure in North Africa with Montgomery’s Eighth Army driving Rommel from El Agheila and closing on Tripoli while American and RAF air fleets blasted Axis ports at Bizerte Tunis and Sousse. American bombers and fighter groups supported the Tunisian front as Axis attempts to counterattack near Medjez El Bab were checked.
Tennessee’s four major cities Nashville Memphis Chattanooga and Knoxville closed the week without a traffic fatality. Shelby County total reached 20 with 24 deaths in Memphis this year. Chattanooga reported 14 city deaths. Knox County 15 with last city death on Oct 15. County totals show 83 deaths in Knox County year to date and 40 last year in the county.
In Cumberland seven miles west of town a man and a woman died in a Sunday two car collision. Ragland died at the scene while Mrs Frances Quinn Powell Stywalt of Richmond died en route to the hospital. The other victim was Harald Wilson Rag Jans, 4, of Lynchburg.
The United States conducts a 20 minute blackout across nine states including North Dakota South Dakota Nebraska Iowa Minnesota Missouri Wyoming Colorado and Kansas to test civilian defense. National OCD Director James Landis says the drill will engage every civilian defense official and volunteer nationwide. About 15 900 000 residents are urged to act as if under actual bombing with 100 Army and civilian defense aircraft observing the exercise and precautions against sabotage stressed.
Tokyo Nichi Nichi and Osaka Mainichi announce a merger creating Mainichi Shimbun. The change follows other consolidations and reflects government aims to concentrate press control, reducing competition and leading to fewer daily papers.
A south wide recruiting drive by the U S Civil Service Commission seeks men and women in war production to join as mechanic learners at the Shelby County School of Aeronautics Whitehaven Tennessee. Training lasts one to six months at $90 monthly, then transfer to the War Department air depot such as Brookley Field Mobile Alabama with promotion to mechanic helper at $125 monthly plus overtime. Women ages 18 to 45 eligible. men with a wife and one dependent child or in 4 F draft class may apply 18 58. Civil Service rep will accept applications and tests in Johnson City Tennessee Tec 18 19.
Louisville reports opening week sales in eight state Burley tobacco area averaged $40.20 per hundredweight with gains over last year. Kentucky’s average was $40.51, contributing to total gross sales of 57,106,584 pounds. Last year’s opening week totals were $2,365,805 and an average of $28.13 per hundredweight.
Virginia school children visit North Carolina shipyard as Pocahontas is launched. Captain Roger Williams receives third U S Maritime Commission award for yard’s Liberty ship production. Miss Mary E Lett christens the ship with Newport News and Wilmington dignitaries present. Greenwich school pupils from Prince William County lead in metal collection.
Berlin broadcasts report that Marshal Rommel has withdrawn his forces from El Agheila to a position further west. The high command claimed Axis forces conducted patrols and artillery duels in Libya while heavy attacks struck Allied positions in Tunisia.
British reports say Rommel's force broke and retreated west of El Agheila as Allied air power pounded the rear and disrupted German armor. The 8th Army pushed through El Brega toward the El Agheila defile with dawn raids and fighter-bomber attacks shaping a major advance in North Africa.
