Engineers charge Gulf Oil escaped four million in taxes
Washington AP reports engineers for the Senate committee allege Gulf Oil escaped about 4.59 million in federal taxes from 1915 to 1919 during Mellon's tenure as chief owner. They say a $3.996 million refund and $594,850 in uncollected taxes were mishandled, with officials rushing the case before 1921. The Standard Oil matter, over 3.378 million, involves cost charging method changes disputed by Blair and division chiefs.
