Allied headquarters report major air assault on Wewak New Guinea with Liberators and Lightnings claiming heavy Japanese losses. Allied forces repelled a night counterattack at Kila ridge near Salamaua while defending airfields and supply lines.
Soviet premier Stalin announced rapid gains as Yelnya fell five miles east of Smolensk and Glukhov 42 miles northeast of Konotop. The offensives extend across the Smolensk and Sevske sectors with additional towns recaptured and Rostov region overrun, signaling a broad summer offensive advance.
Strikes erupt in nine Danish cities as occupation authorities arrest leaders, tighten grip, and face renewed resistance. Monarch King Christian jailed, government under house arrest, while Danish officers and citizens resist with sabotage, refugees flee to Sweden amid Nazi control and martial law.
A small apartment fire caused wall damage and a damaged electric stove. The blaze occurred Tuesday around 3:20 a.m. in unit occupied by Mrs. R. G. Williams in Terminal Buildings. Fire officials credited unattended groceries and a left on burner as causes.

W Le Holyoke, director of public works, advised housewives to draw water for family use in anticipation of a scheduled service interruption. The outage is expected between 1 and 4 p m Wednesday due to construction work on the settling basin at the plant.
Army Engineer Recruiter Becond Lieutenant Fred Andrews arrives in Kingsport for a two day visit as part of a two week tour of upper East Tennessee. He seeks 25 specialist recruits and has already filed applications for about 30 men in recent visits. Interviews run 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the post office recruiting office.
A passenger train and a freight train collided near Wayland New York, killing 27 and injuring about 150. Emergency crews from multiple towns aided victims, with blood plasma flown in and many seriously burned or trapped in wreckage.
The Rationing Board warns motorists that old style B and C gasoline coupons expire at midnight August 31. Drivers should swap old books for new currency by September 2, bringing old coupon books to the board for replacement under OPA guidance.
Major Thomas McNeer, director of the Tenagsgee State Guard carnival, orders a general mobilization of all Mingsport guard units for Wednesday at the carnival grounds Broad Lane Center Streets. The gathering aims to plan and ensure attendance of all units including Company BE, Machine Gun and Chemical Company, Medical Detachment, Auxiliary Headquarters Company, Regimental Band, and others. The carnival opens Thursday night.
German radio says British troops tried a minor landing on Italy southeast of Reggio Calabria across Sicily but were immediately repelled. Reuters notes no details. London gave no comment and Allied command issued no announcement.
Prime Minister Churchill pressed for a tripartite meeting among Britain, the United States and Russia to align on future security plans and to push discussions toward higher level government engagement. Charles L. Lineback Kingsport director of public safety said Garrett Wilburn King 43 formerly of Pulaski Va is held awaiting disposition of charges by the U S Secret Service. King is charged with sending letters and wires to the President and to the Secretary of the Treasury demanding money. He was arrested Monday in Tad pay by city patrolman and others after a secret service request. King a former Dupont employee has been in Kingsport about two weeks hoping for employment. A lunacy warrant was previously issued by Pulaski County officers.
Henry Atwood 30 of Walnut Street was bound over to the September Sullivan Grand Jury on five counts of forgery after a preliminary hearing. He allegedly attempted to cash forged checks at Firestone and made similar attempts at the Penney Company McAninch Market and other local stores, with forged checks totaling $25.50 and $45 found in his possession.
Grocery stores will close at 12 30 p m Wednesday to give staff an extra half day of summer vacation the manager announced Tuesday Meanwhile housewives were urged to shift shopping plans noting the long Labor Day holiday as many stores will also close Monday
