In St Helens Oregon Democratic congressional nominee Pvt Marvin Owens 24 will start campaigning after a Monday discharge ordered by Secretary Wilber B Brucker. Owens sought release with support from Rep Edith Green and Rep Walter Norblad amid a bid to unseat the incumbent.
In Pearisburg Virginia police detained Mary Elizabeth Adams Giles 20 on murder charges after her 3 year old son Terry died and his stomach was found loaded with arsenic. Three other children Teresa Anne nine two others 10 5 are hospitalized after arsenic poisoning.
Wall Street voices a shift toward a higher steady living standard with less extreme swings. Sidney Lurie of Josephthal & Co notes stability in consumer buying power and a nonessential recession risk, while J W Sparks & Co highlights Victoire Corp stock as a possible upturn in low-priced shares. Oil shares and petroleum demand remain strong, and IBM still dominates early computer markets though rivals may rise.
University Park AP reports chief counsel Jacob Scher criticizes executive privilege claims as pernicious and unconstitutional in withholding information from Congress. He notes lines traced to Washington and Eisenhower era, arguing only courts can settle the constitutional question and that secrecy has risen since 1954.
Washington AP reports the government civilian payroll rose by 307 million for the year ended June 30, not counting July 1 pay increases. Byrd notes payrolls exceed a billion monthly and foresees further growth. a Senate-House committee says last year’s civilian payroll totaled 12.637 billion plus foreign national pay. He criticizes agency secrecy limits.
Nept une New Jersey reports that 24 year old John Brodeur had his right leg amputated at the knee after a shark attack Monday. Surgeon Dr Charles Samaha said the operation was to conserve the patient’s life due to infection and inadequate circulation. Brodeur remains in fair condition at Fuki Memorial Hospital. His fiancée Jean Filoromo of Jersey City says their marriage is postponed to an indefinite date but will occur.
