President Roosevelt backs liberal candidates in Democratic primaries on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. In South Carolina, Sen. Ellison D. Smith faces Rev. Oli D. Johnston, with McAdoo in California opposing pension plans. California and South Carolina select state tickets as races unfold amid New Deal battles and Seventh District intrigue.
The forecast notes fair conditions in Tennessee and Virginia with only minor temperature changes. Kentucky shows fair tonight with a slight rise, and a wet pattern is possible midweek. Washington and nearby areas expect fair to partly cloudy skies, with isolated thunderstorms in the western portions later in the period.
Monterrey Mexico August 30 Nine dead and over 400 homeless as a hurricane battered the northeastern industrial center. Torrential rains inundated streets and rivers rose quickly. Authorities sheltered the homeless in public buildings while investigations sought more casualties and damage figures.
In Memphis on Aug 30 a chancery court action tested whether City Judge Marian Spead Boyd would be sworn in as Shelby County District Attorney General. Boyd, cleared for office Aug 4, faced a move by Joseph Hanover, appointed by Gov Browning to succeed the late Wi Tyler McCain, to delay or block the oath. Judge Swepston awaited rulings on Boyd's petition to enjoin Hanover from taking the office, with a Sept 27 date noted.
In Columbia on August 30 voters weighed a pivotal primary with President Roosevelt's preference for Governor Olin D Johnston shaping the contest. The 74-year-old senator faced a withdrawal by Edgar A Brown who launched sharp attacks over political alignments while the race drew into the curling page 8 note.
In Indianapolis two gunmen were killed after opening fire on three deputy sheriffs who halted a taxi they rode in. Deputies, unhurt, shot the attackers as the men fled the scene. The gunmen were identified as Eat Lindsay and William Davis, both from Council Bluffs Iowa, with a dog and weapons found in their car. One suspect bore the tag A V Bradshaw of Peges Okla. The car had Arkansas plates and Iowa plates. details appear on page 8.
Senator Berry accuses WPA Administrator Hopkins of dodging the issue in a dispute over alleged political activity by the Works Progress Administration in Tennessee. Berry says Hopkins misrepresented the matter while defending WPA actions linked to his defeated Senate bid and cites letters protesting partisan use of WPA funds.

Chattanooga August 30 Officials refuse to sanction a strike by TEPCO linemen while the AFL affiliated IBEW demands sole bargaining rights. Transmission lines are repeatedly dynamited, including a 154000 volt line near Nashville and a tower at a major substation, causing outages in Maryville and other areas as the labor dispute widens. Union leaders clash over representation and bargaining authority amid ongoing sabotage claims and mediation talks.
Washington noted Democratic Representative Dies urged Secretary Perkins to resume deportation proceedings against Harry Bridges, Western Coast labor leader. Dies cited witness depositions showing Bridges as a Communist party member and argued that postponement risks witness loss. previous suspensions followed a related Supreme Court ruling.
The American dollar rose above its 1938 parity with the British pound for the 61st time, trading to 4.85 at market close. In Texas, W. D. LaClede Missouri August 30 Dr William F LaMance 32 a former boxer and Sunday school teacher was brought here for preliminary examination on a charge of murdering his wife Ella LaMance 29 whose body was found August 15 in a fruit cellar behind their home The case has drawn attention in a town of 650 with ties to Gen John J Pershing and local sports and religious circles.
Tokyo reports War Minister Lt. Gen Seishiro Iengeki urged strengthening Japanese forces on the Siberian frontier and outlined peace terms in the Chinese war. He said border strength in Manchoukuo must rise and border forces, especially air units, have been sacrificed to China and need replenishment amid possible new incidents along the frontier. General Kagaki noted Jap troops details from July 25.
London and Paris moved to united action as chaos loomed over Czechoslovakia. British ministers endorsed military and naval readiness while French officials signaled full mobilization power. Diplomats including Kennedy and Corbin prepared coordinated pressure on Hitler. Prague awaited Czechoslovak proposals to quell Sudeten tensions.
New York August 30 A police officer formerly in plain clothes testified against Tammany District Leader James J Hines in a conspiracy trial tied to the Dutch Schultz racket He said he raided a Schultz controlled policy bank drop station in 1933 before being demoted to uniform duty with a $240 yearly pay cut The witness also claimed he complained to Hines about the transfers to outlying districts
President Roosevelt and Secretary Hull conferred on the central Europe crisis. Hull reviewed latest dispatches from European capitals with advisers. The State Department briefing warned a real crisis could peak around the Nazi party rally at Nuremberg within a fortnight.
Philadelphia August 30 Gov George H Earle said Coroner Charles H Hersch would take drastic action at an inquest to determine guilt for four hunger strikers who died in Philadelphia county prison. He ordered weekly inspections of 70 county prisons and 300 local jails by state police as welfare dept agents to uncover and publish unsafe conditions and seek legal remedies if needed.
