Rodgers Funeral Rites Held Today
Havre de Grace Md Aug 30 Commander John Rodgers died Friday in an airplane fall at the Philadelphia Navy yard. Private rites were held today at Zion Hill for the family as the nation prepared to honor him at Arlington National Cemetery tomorrow. His 72 year old mother, heartbroken by the loss, and his father Rear Admiral John A Rodgers received sympathizers at the door. A brother Fred had died in Alaska 16 years earlier.

In Manville Rhode Island August 30 strike agitators attacked the Manville Jenckes cotton mill after strike breakers arrived in armored cars. A crowd of around 1000 roared outside, stones shattered windows, and kerosene rags were hurled through blinds as Chief Michael Finn battled the blaze. Damages were estimated in the hundreds of dollars as strikers warned of further action. The strike began August two: 1700 operatives walked out over non union room fixers and longer hours. A sympathetic walkout followed at Woonsocket’s Manville plant with about 2000 workers.

Short Story Writer Faces Manslaughter Charge
Glendale Calif August 3. J A Wykoff a purported short story writer is charged with manslaughter after the death yesterday of his wife Margaret Morgan Wykoff a motion picture actress who died after leaping from a speeding car. Police say he abandoned the wheel and jumped from the vehicle as the car sped away with two other occupants including Dave W Taggert who could not reach the wheel in time. Mrs Wykoff suffered a skull fracture and died later in hospital.

German swimmer breaks Gertrude Ederle Channel record
Otis Vierkoeten of Germany swam the English Channel in 12 hours 48 minutes, beating Miss Gertrude Ederle's 14 hour 31 minute mark.
