Peacetime supply improves as new autos and chicken stocks move in, driving down used car prices and easing wartime price controls. Officials say wages and employment will shift with millions seeking work while the Navy trims forces. The OPA maintains ceiling prices on nonwar goods, and chicken producers expect ample supplies for Thanksgiving.
The Navy aims to return 2,839,000 sailors and Marines to civilian life within a year. Secretary Forrestal outlined expanded demobilization, cutting active strength to about 500,000 enlisted and 50,000 officers, with around 12.6 million service members discharged over 12 months and 244,000 officers affected.
The Army outlined plans to liberalize its discharge point system, stating they will compute all points and discharge those with 80 points or more while keeping 60 points or more from overseas. Maj. Local office totals reveal Kingsport 13, Jackson 11, Memphis 14, Milan 4, Chattanooga 7, Knoxville 47, Nashville 66. Officials note 21000 jobs were available last week and many youths return to school or await prospects before claiming or accepting work.
