Cherry Returns to Tennessee Prison
William L. Cherry, a convict who surrendered to police in Cincinnati on Monday, was returned to a Tennessee state prison farm in Nashville where he had escaped in 1917 during a three to fifteen year term for passing worthless checks. He said he surrendered because his conscience hurt and he had felt no peace since gaining illegal freedom. Cherry claimed World War II hero status and past service with the San Francisco police and San Quentin guard staff. He was escorted by two deputies.

Plane Falls Into Ocean Kills One 12 Rescued
Gloucester Aug 28 A Pan American Airways amphibian plane with nine passengers and crew plunged into the sea after a pontoon break. Pilot W L Elmore of Miami guided survivors to a rubber raft as radio operator Alfred W Eston located it. A passenger, Edward Banwell of Auburn Maine, drowned during transfer to the raft. The Nova Julia fishing schooner reached the scene, taking the injured and survivors to Gloucester where nine passengers were treated for bruises shock and immersion.
