Soviet central front troops attacked the German salient 120 miles west of Moscow and forced retreats as Red Army advances claimed hundreds of German losses. Soviet claims include advancing to Mozdok area, near Grozny oil fields, and recapturing 610 communities as Zhukov’s forces drive Germans back up to about 20 miles in the Rzhev Vyazma sector.
Samuel J. Ellis, 72, retired former president of a Memphis iron works, died at his home in Memphis on Wednesday. He held several patents on machinery for oil mills. Survivors include two sons, William C. Ellis and James Ellis, both of Kingstonport, Tenn.
Federal court order restrained the Kaiser shipbuilding firm headed by Henry J. Kaiser from further alleged GPA steel price ceiling violations while a Cleveland concert was also halted. War Production Board chairman Donald M. Nelson notified armed services he is withdrawing from hundreds of procurement offices, curbing their power to grant priority ratings.
Senator McKellar of Tennessee predicted the state will repeal its poll tax by the January legislative session. He said Tennessee’s governor and candidates favor abolishing the poll tax as a voting prerequisite and noted the legislature will act to remove it. The Senate debated an absentee ballot bill for armed forces, with McKellar opposing the nullification amendment.
Mrs Aline Glendy Darst of Roanoke chosen by Navy Secretary Knox to christen the destroyer USS Spratson in Orange Texas shipyard. The name honors John Glendy Spraston, a navy lieutenant killed in action June 8 during the War Between the States. Darst will be joined by her brother Cloyd D Glendy of Dublin Virginia.
