Washington reports a House high command member says a probe is underway into recorded votes by members known to be out of town during roll calls. Preliminary checks suggest several illegitimate absences, with leaders fearing deliberate absentee voting and possible expulsions.
Harlan Kentucky August 27 news reports counsel for former Harlan policeman C C Keys says an appeal will be filed against the 18 year sentence after a circuit court jury convicted him of murdering Tom Cornett. Earlier trial at Somerset saw Keys and former officer Este Giles each receive 21 year terms. Giles awaits a second trial.
San Diego August 27. The 15th infantry seeks volunteers for service in western China not to fight. The recruiting service wants musicians for the regimental band at Tientsin.

Joseph J. Bruno a 54 year old former detective and former Kelayres Pa Republican boss was recaptured in New York after escaping from a Pennsylvania prison last December. He was serving a triple life term for involvement in the 1934 Kelayres election eve massacre when he walked away from a guard during a dentist appointment.
Flooding from week long rains and heavy downpours sweeps the east south and west. Four people died in a private plane crash near Albany New York as rain and fog prevented landing. A Wellsboro Louisiana CCC lieutenant drowned during a flood rescue. Washington residents fled to higher ground as rainfall hit 1.52 inches in a 24 hour span. Localities across New York state Pennsylvania North Carolina and Colorado faced rising rivers and damaged roads and rails. Nebraska faced a continuing drought prompting calls for aid. Infantile paralysis outbreaks alarm health officials while New York flood survivors fear a repeat of 1935 devastation.
Hawkins County magistrate K. B. Kenner charges three county court members and the county attorney with a rule of ruin policy as rumors of ouster proceed ings grow. A decision on the injunction against the ousted school board will affect whether about 1000 students return this year. Court may meet in a special session to fund the matter once higher court rulings are received.
State Senator Fletcher Morgan accused Governor Browning and the WPA of using state funds to build a road through Lewis S. Pope's land in Bledsoe County near Cannon Creek, purportedly to reach Pope coal mines. Morgan called for investigation and criticized the project as misuse of public money.

Carl Penley, 22, of Kingsport, jailed at Sullivan County on manslaughter and reckless driving counts after a fatal Bristol highway crash near Indian Springs. Bail set at 2000 for manslaughter and 250 for reckless driving. grand jury to hear September term. Witnesses described the head on collision and Penley’s delay in leaving the scene.
Andrew W. Mellon former secretary of the treasury and ambassador to Great Britain died after a month of illness at his daughter's home in Southampton. He leaves his son Paul and daughter Ailsa and will be buried in Pittsburgh where a funeral is planned at East Liberty Presbyterian Church. Mellon's wealth was speculated to exceed 500 million dollars, with an official estimate of 205 million given in 1931.
Secretary Hull announced Washington has served notice on Japan and China to respect American rights in the far east. He said suspects of blocking Chinese ports and tensions would be studied with no definite conclusions. Observers view U S resolve as maintaining far eastern interests while urging peaceful negotiations.
President Roosevelt signed H. R. 7051 approving 34.177 million dollars for flood control projects in the Ohio valley and other sites. Milwaukee August 27 AP Chairman John L Lewis of the CIO declared the United Automobile Workers will organize Ford Motor Company workers, challenging Henry Ford and signaling a strike era escalation.
Albert Dyer, convicted slayer of three Inglewood girls, awaits a death sentence to be pronounced by Superior Judge Thomas P. White on Tuesday. A jury found him guilty after nearly two days of deliberation, accusing him of luring Melba Everett Madeline Everett and Jeanette Stephens to Baldwin Hills June 26 and killing them. He shouted inspiration of rope in the jail corridor and spoke with Robert James, the prior convicted killer, before being led away.
Conley T McClellan 37, Tennessee Eastman worker from Gate City Virginia, died at Community hospital after lingering unconscious since Tuesday. He was struck by a car near his home allegedly driven by B K Gray of Dunganon Virginia. Oscar V Stair of Gate City died when thrown from a truck on the Bristol highway. A head on collision near Indian Springs killed Mrs Mary Virginia Morse and Paul K Jackson. Carl Penley bound over to Sullivan county circuit court for manslaughter. Funeral for McClellan set for tomorrow at 2 p m from Southern Methodist church.
In Big Spring Tennessee a bandit, Jeff Hunter 27, was killed during a store holdup after a taxi ride with accomplice Willard Holloway 24. The other bandit was captured. Two officers were wounded in a midnight pursuit through Meigs County. Hunter had prior parole from Lansing Michigan for highway robbery.
In northwest Shanghai Lotien, three divisions of Chinese forces battled Japanese troops as bombs and machine gun fire razed Lotien 12 miles northwest of Shanghai. Meanwhile Britain's ambassador Sir Hughe Montgomery Knatchbull-Hugessen was wounded by machine gun fire and received a blood transfusion, his condition improving but still serious.
Scott Noblin announced that Scott County schools will open September 6 despite financial strains and political bickering. The board has appealed to the Virginia Supreme Court in a mandamus petition to compel the Board of Supervisors to fund the 1957 38 school year with the maximum tax levy of 2 dollars per hundred.
