Banking Records Sought by Senate Body

Washington Aug 20 three years of records of Virginia District of Columbia banks were summoned before the senate campaign funds committee as it traces expenditures by Bishop Cannon in the 1928 presidential drive against Alfred E. Smith. Witnesses from local banks testified about accounts and transfers connected to the anti Smith effort.

Treasury Receipts and Expenditures for August Update

Treasury receipts for August 24 totaled 6 953 356.62 with expenditures 17 118 126.75 leaving a balance of 97 607 834.02. Customs receipts up to August 28 reached 30 050 147.84.

Plan Relief Fund Drive In October

Washington Aug 26 The administration aims to inform Congress by December that locally raised relief funds will cover unemployed needs for the winter. Walter S. Gifford heads the plan to run a nationwide drive Oct 1 to Nov 21, coordinated with welfare groups and city state and county campaigns. The Red Cross roll call Oct 11–25 falls within this period. The drive will coordinate rather than raise funds directly and will use radio and national notices. Gifford seeks voluntary help from business leaders to support the effort.

Hamaguchi Hamaguchi Dies Former Japanese Premier Passes at 1

Reece Accused of Misstatement in Use Tennessee Records

NASHVILLE Aug 25 AP D D Robertson state superintendent of banks issued a formal statement accusing Commissioner of Insurance and Banking J J Reece of making an unqualified misstatement regarding the use of Tennessee records in the Asheville trials of Col Luke Lea and others. The records were those of the Liberty Bank and Trust Company of Nashville of which Rot axtson is receiver. He said Reece claimed in a phone call that an injunction restrained removal of the records to North Carolina but that no such injunction had been issued.
