Rural crime up as arrests lag in nonmetropolitan areas
FBI Uniform Crime Reports show serious crime rising 1 percent nationally with rural and suburban areas growing faster than large cities. In 1974 nearly 11.3 million serious crimes occurred. only one in five led to an arrest. Murder rose 4 percent in rural areas. firearms accounted for 66 percent of homicides. Thirty-five percent of those charged were under 25, with many between 25 and 9.4.
