The United States warns Americans to evacuate the Portuguese colony amid fierce fighting among guerrilla factions vying for control ahead of Angola’s November independence.
A roundup of violent crimes includes Carolyn Ward given a 1b year sentence for dismembering her son in 1974, a Kent State civil suit seeking 46 million by wounded students and families, and the murder charge against the wife of South Carolina Episcopal Bishop William F. O Neal after his throat was slashed. Police report the bishop was slain at home and his wife faces murder charges.
Warner Brothers announces The Exorcist Part Two with Linda Blair returning as a 17 year old high school senior. The film aims to capitalize on the original's box office success earning over 100 million dollars. Mayor Daley blasts DNC conventions as less entertaining. Greg Allman avoids touring after a motorcycle accident with a cast to come off before the Aug 31 start.
Avalon California UPI reports the Glomar Explorer and its support barge headed offshore for a nine day secret mission off Santa Catalina Island tests. The tax dispute centers on whether the ship is taxable federal property or Hughes owned.

Photos mailed to United Press International and Hoffa’s son stirred interest but were dismissed as non leads in the James R. Hoffa disappearance. Hoffa’s son calls the images a cruel joke while Orlando attorney Ed Kirkland says their client sent them to clarify questions. Lerman, an Orlando inventor in a wheelchair, reportedly knew Hoffa and sought a union for the physically handicapped. Kirkland planned to have the FBI meet to address inquiries about the photos.
