Washington reports state that the Geneva Cable Corporation plant at Bayonne in New Jersey has been restored to private management. Kingsport youths Norman Monroy Kinsburg and James Henry Hickman left the city for Nashville to seek final enlistment in the Navy. Kinsburg, 18, a 1942 Bennett graduate, will enter the V-2 Reserve as apprentice Joan for college training, while Hickman will enlist as apprentice seaman in the V-6 Reserve.
Budapest broadcasts report that Stephan Horthy, 38, son of Admiral Nicholas Horthy regent of Hungary, was killed on the Russian front where he served as a flight lieutenant with AXIS forces. He had recently left Hungary for active service and was known as a famed sportsman flier.
The Chicago Tribune and other papers were cleared in a five day grand jury inquiry into publication on June 7 of allegedly confidential naval information. The panel found no indictments and concluded no violations of law were disclosed. The case arose from material related to the Japanese fleet at Midway reported by Johnston aboard the Lexington.
Fifty five selectees departed Kingsport this morning to resume active duty after 15 day furloughs. The procession to the bus terminal included the Dobyns-Bennett high school band and Legion Color Guard, while Acting Corp. William H. Highsmith led the group. Several names are listed among the returnees and noted absentees.
Washington selective service registrants rated with minor defects become eligible as the 1-B class is abolished. Reclassification of age begins Sept 1 and ends Jan 1, with possible moves to 1-A or 4-F. Local boards limit one quarter of 1-Bs moved to 1-A each month. After induction the army will decide duty type. Education officials urged halting voluntary enlistments and subsidizing college education for future officers and scientists.
Washington P Positive and Prompt action to forestall any war production shutdowns due to lack of materials appeared imminent to day in consonance with Donald M Welsons newly enunciated get tough policy. The production chief was expected to give regional directors power to issue quickie priority routings to provide needed small quantities of materials or parts for war contracts at risk of stoppage. Eighteen officials of AFL and CIO metal fabricating unions were invited to a conference here next Monday to discuss raw material shortages. Nelson vowed decisive action against plant shut downs and denied forecasts that 1 000 plants might slow or halt without steel, coke, aluminum and other materials.
The War Production Board forecasts that President Roosevelt's target of 2,000,000 dead weight tons of shipping for the year will be exceeded by about ten percent.
Allied command hailed a nine hour Dieppe raid as a major success with about 10,000 raiders landing along 123 miles of the coast in 300 to 1,400 boats. British and American units reportedly breached into Dieppe and held parts of the city amid heavy German resistance. Casualties and losses cited include dozens of Allied planes and ships, with claims of German aircraft destroyed and prisoners taken, while RAF and navy operations demonstrated control of the Channel and potential invasion support.
Hugh W. Cnapenhaver, county court clerk, announced a large shipment of Tennessee license plates at his Kingsport office. Motorists who establish residence in the county must buy Tennessee plates at once, even if their home state is elsewhere. Violations of the registration law are subject to fines, and newcomers may be cited into court on sight if they do not comply.
