Washington reports the government will seek a new grand jury indictment against Owen Lattimore, former Far Eastern affairs adviser to the State Department. Leo A. Rover announces new evidence to be presented starting September 13, including aspects of Lattimore sworn testimony before the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee in February 1952.
Burlington Newfoundland August report details an 11 year old woman facing charge in Superior Court for sharing a hotel with a man. The case centers on the death of Mrs Frances Neal in Burlington with a October term set for Alamance Superior Court in Graham. The husband Robert Neal of Rogersville was convicted in Recorder's Court for immoral purposes and plans to appeal. George Best testified about the incident at a Burlington hotel and the couple were neighbors at Fort Knox Kentucky.
The East Tennessee fair hosts its annual Baby Show Thursday through Saturday August 26 to 28 with daily judging. On Thursday at 3 p.m. judges will evaluate girls from three months to two years, boys from seven months to one year, and toddlers under two years. Friday features more judging for boys one to four and girls one to four, plus twins events. Saturday will crown winners including Best Baby and Best Twins.
A fire on Brickey Street gutted a six room house owned by B. G. Girls when a can of oil toppled during startup of a space heater caused basement flames. The owner and family were away. Firemen battled for about an hour. only a sewing machine on the back porch was saved. Attic and closets in a nearby five room frame at 145 Dewey Street were damaged by a blaze started in the attic. two Kingsport units fought the fire until 8 20 p.m. An off duty fireman drove to the scene with a garden hose to help.
The East Hawkins Fair runs through Saturday night with entries in all departments except livestock. Livestock judging is Friday at 10 30 AM, with other departments judged at 8 39 AM Friday. Prizes and prizes ribbons are offered across poultry 4-H exhibits and crafts. The fair also features shows, entertainment, and a variety of contests, with cash prizes ranging up to 7 800, plus ribbons and prizes for multiple divisions.
In Tazewell County, thieves robbed two establishments, stealing about $1,190 and nearly $11,000 more in a separate incident. State Trooper N B Henry reported a Richlands supermarket robbery netting $958 and about $200 from nine safes. Bailey, manager of the Tazewell Livestock Market, said he deposited $60,600 in checks and cash earlier that morning. Police described the methods as similar across the robberies.
Memphis, Ann 19 Ne Waller BH, 67, former president and founder of IALSmith Termite Control System, died unexpectedly today of heart ailment. Survivors include his widow and daughter Mrs. Cecelia Cahoon of Jackson, Tennessee, and a son, further details unavailable.
Washington reports a revised anti Communist bill clearing Congress with broad support. The House approved the measure 265 to 2 in favor while the Senate backed it 79 to 0, removing a key clause prohibiting party membership from being a legal status. President Eisenhower indicated acceptance, though administration opposed portions remain under debate. The bill, close to the president’s earlier stance, now heads to his desk for signature.
Italian statesman Alcide De Gasperi, veteran anti communist leader who guided Italy after World War II, died in a northern Italy mountain retreat after a week of heart pains. He led efforts toward European unity and secured Italy’s NATO membership, shaping postwar politics until 1953. His death soon drew reactions from Rome with Scelba and others departing to his side. De Gasperi, once premier and interior minister, championed anti communism and European integration, facing later stability decline amid economic distress and partisan pressures.
