Cattle from 14 counties in Upper East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia gathered at J. Fred Johnson Park for the Kingsport District Junior Livestock Show. Exhibitors compete for $200 in premiums, with judging by UT staff and county agents. Winners advance to regional fairs in Gray Station, Knoxville, Nashville, and Memphis.

Heifer Wins Angus Futurity at Lexington Kentucky
J C McLean of Quincy Kansas wins premier exhibitor honors as Dor Macs Elluna 90 earns supreme champion for the Angus Futurity at Keeneland Race Course. About 600 Angus breeders from 29 states competed for more than 10,000 in prize money. an auction added 3,700 to the American Angus Auxiliary scholarship fund. Dor Macs Elluna 90 also claimed senior and grand champion female, with Eyas Bardoliermere 15 as senior and grand champion bull. The Dor Macs line dominated with other awards going to Dor Macs Queen P and Dor Macs Batdelermere 490, plus a get-of-fire win for Flying W Ranch progeny.

O'Neal of the W Agricultural Extension Service announces UT Schncesling Station will hold tested boar sales in Cookeville on Sept 2 and Lexington on Sept 3. About 20 tested boars from Duroc Hampshire Poland China and Yorkshire breeds will be on offer with gilts from breeders testing hogs at the station. Buyers receive data on grain rate feed efficiency back fat index eye carcass and related metrics to aid sire selection.

New 4-H Photography Project Arouses Interest This Fall
4 H Chatter notes a new 4 H project on photography launching this fall if a club can supply a lead adult. Manuals are strong for both members and leaders and volunteers are urged to contact the club. Teddy Thomas attended 4 H Roundup at the University of Tennessee for the first time and praised the experience despite heat and long days. Bob Winter, UT student, offered a paint screen tip to prevent paint on screens. A 4 H dress revue for girls and Home Demonstration Club members is set for 2 pm Thursday at the J Fred Johnson Memorial Library auditorium. Gwendolyn Scams Kyle Thomas and Johnny Adkins are the only Sullivan 4 H members showing registered jerseys this week, with various cattle projects. Two club members, Larry Smith and Gary Taylor, were accidentally sent to the Kingsport pullet show and later redirected to Bristol. The Welk of the Appalachian District Fair opens at Gray Station on Tuesday and runs through Saturday night with Sullivan 4 H booths and cattle exhibits planned.

Feed Grain Payments Coming Soon for 1964 Program
Sullivan County farmers in the 1964 feed grain program will soon receive remaining diversion and price support payments for corn grain sorghum and barley. Part of the diversion payments was advanced when signups occurred to cover production costs. The 1964 program runs through the calendar year and diverted land may be ignazed starting Nov. 1. final payments do not end the program.

Grain Sorghum Yields Rise in 1963 Across County
ROCERSVILLE Sankins County farms produced 1,900 bushels of grain sorghum from 15M acres in 1963, up from 11,600 bushels on the same area in 1962, per Tennessee Crop Reporting Service. The average yield per acre rose from 32 to 26 bushels. Greene County also showed higher yields from 42 to 47 bushels with acreage cut by one third, totaling 4,200 bushels from 100 acres versus 6,300 bushels from 15 acres in 1962.

Sullivan County ASC announces the nomination period for community and county committees. Farmers have until August 24 to submit nominations by petition, with ballots mailed September 8 and return deadline in mid September. Eighteen community committees will be chosen, with top members meeting September 25 to elect the County ASC Committee.

Big Stone Gap members and families attend the Southern States Cooperative barbecue at the elementary school. Carl Wygal was named board chairman with Herbert Slemp as vice chairman. W. B. Galloway and K. B. Lytle were elected to the board. Committee members from Big Stone Gap were named, with W. D. Smith of Lebanon delivering the principal address. The cooperative operates in five states and reported six million dollars in purchasing and marketing volume for 1963-84.
